Which Plat Silicone is Right for Your Project: 10, 25, or 40?

The main difference between Plat 10, 25, and 40 lies in their hardness levels, measured on the Shore A scale. Plat 10 is the softest and most flexible, making it ideal for intricate molds with fine details or delicate materials like chocolate.

Plat 25 offers a medium level of firmness, providing a balance between flexibility and durability for a wider range of projects. Plat 40 is the firmest, best suited for molds that need to hold their shape under more pressure or when casting tougher materials like concrete. The choice depends on the level of detail and the strength needed for your project.

Ease of Use

With a straightforward 1:1 mix ratio and a working time of 35 minutes, Plat 25 is ideal for both beginners and professionals. It cures within 16-24 hours and offers consistent, easy-to-manage results without requiring extensive degassing or complicated processes.

🥒 Is Plat 25 food safe?

🥕 Yes, Plat 25 is food safe and complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, which ensures it can be safely used with food materials like chocolate, sugar, fondant, and more. However, molds made with Plat 25 for food use should be exclusively reserved for food and not mixed with other materials like resin or wax to avoid contamination.

🥽 Do I need to degas Plat 25 silicone before pouring?

⛽ While degassing is not required, it is recommended for achieving the highest level of detail and avoiding air bubbles in your mold, especially for intricate designs. If you're casting resin and using a pressure pot, then degassing is necessary to ensure the best results. However, if you're not using a pressure pot, it will still work fine, but the final mold may not look as polished or smooth as it could with degassing.

🎨 What precautions should I take when using Plat 25?

🎊 Ensure that your mold frame is watertight, and avoid contact with porous materials like fabric or clothing, as Plat 25 will bond to them. It’s also important to work in a well-ventilated, dust-free environment and use personal protective equipment like gloves and safety glasses.

🎨 Can I add color to Plat 25?

🪄Yes, you can mix Plat 25 with pigment powders or liquid dyes to achieve your desired color. However, avoid using oil or water-based products, as they can interfere with the curing process.

💡What should I do if my mold seems fused or stuck after curing?

🌟 Don’t panic if the mold seems stuck to the master. Most molds will have a natural seam where you can gently pull them apart. If the mold seems difficult to separate, try finding a corner or an edge where you can carefully lift and work your way around the mold to release it. Using a blunt tool like a plastic wedge or a craft spatula can help pry it open gently without damaging the mold.

If you plan to make two-piece molds or use materials that might bond with the silicone, always apply a mold release like Mold Release & Conditioner  or Mold Release to prevent the silicone from bonding to itself or to the master. If mold release wasn’t used, and the mold is fused, the silicone may be irreversibly bonded to the master, which can lead to tearing or damage during removal. In such cases, work slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the mold or the master.
